Whether you’re relocating for retirement, purchasing a second home along the Gulf Coast, or making Northwest Florida your permanent residence, moving is one of life’s biggest transitions. While exciting, it also comes with hundreds—if not thousands—of decisions.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the average American moves nearly 12 times during their lifetime. That’s a move about every six years! It’s no surprise that moving consistently ranks as one of life’s most stressful events.
At My Home Watch Concierge, many of our clients are making that exciting move to Florida. Over the years, we’ve learned that a little planning before moving day can make settling into your new home much smoother.
Every Move Is Different
Not all moves are created equal. You may be:
- Relocating for work
- Downsizing after retirement
- Purchasing your dream beach home
- Establishing a second residence
- Moving closer to family
- Transitioning into a vacation lifestyle
Each situation presents its own challenges, but one thing remains the same: organization saves time, money, and frustration.
Start with Three Simple Steps: Sort, Purge, Pack
Sort
Gather similar items together before packing.
Instead of packing room by room immediately, collect all your books, towels, kitchen gadgets, tools, holiday decorations, or linens into one location. Seeing everything together often reveals duplicates you didn’t realize you owned.
For example, towels spread across three bathrooms may seem reasonable until they’re piled together. Suddenly it’s much easier to decide which sets to keep and which ones can be donated.
Purge
Don’t pay to move things you no longer want.
As you sort, create three categories:
- Keep
- Donate
- Sell or Discard
Every item you eliminate is one less thing to pack, transport, unpack, and find storage space for in your new home.
Pack
Protect your belongings with quality packing paper and sturdy boxes.
Fill empty spaces inside boxes so items cannot shift during transport. Most moving damage occurs because contents are able to move around inside the box.
If you’re moving into a multi-story home, think ahead about where you’ll actually use items instead of simply packing everything by category.
A Color-Coded Label System Makes Unpacking Easier
One of the most helpful systems I developed during my own move was a simple color-coded labeling method.
Each room was assigned its own color, and every box received:
- A colored room label
- A detailed list of its contents
- A “Fragile” notation when necessary
Rather than writing only “Kitchen,” I’d list exactly what was inside the box.
This proved invaluable when we were establishing a second residence. We wanted to avoid purchasing duplicates of items we already owned, while still knowing exactly where everything was if we needed it.
The biggest benefit?
When we arrived after a long day of moving, I could immediately locate the box containing the coffee maker for the next morning!
Unpack Smarter, Not Harder
Instead of filling every room with stacks of boxes, we unloaded everything into the garage first.
Then we simply carried in the boxes for one room at a time.
Benefits included:
- No climbing over boxes
- Easier furniture placement
- Faster unpacking
- Less overwhelming workspaces
- Quick access to important items
Sometimes a little extra planning at the beginning saves hours of frustration later.

New Home? Don’t Forget About Ongoing Home Care
For many new Florida homeowners, especially those purchasing a seasonal residence, the move doesn’t end once the boxes are unpacked.
If you’ll only be living in your Florida home part of the year, regular home monitoring becomes an important part of protecting your investment.
Florida’s heat, humidity, heavy rains, and tropical weather can quickly turn a small maintenance issue into a costly repair if no one is checking on the property.
At My Home Watch Concierge, we provide professional Home Watch services throughout Navarre Beach, Pensacola Beach, Gulf Breeze, Midway, Perdido Key, and surrounding areas. While you’re away, we perform scheduled visual inspections, monitor for signs of leaks or humidity issues, coordinate trusted service providers when needed, and provide detailed reports with photos so you always know how your home is doing.
Moving is a new beginning. With a little organization—and a trusted local partner watching over your home—you can spend less time worrying and more time enjoying everything Florida has to offer.
